Free health and fitness assessments, subsidised on-site yoga classes, flexible work hours, counselling services and chocolate fish tributes are all part of the Ministry of Transport's workplace wellness programme.
Since 2004/5, the Ministry has introduced initiatives throughout its organisation to encourage and celebrate its staff adopting an active and healthy "workstyle".
Today the measures to support staff wellness are embedded in Ministry values, policies and practices, boosting staff morale, providing opportunities to build relationships and allowing staff to enjoy each other's company in an informal setting.
Managers acknowledge the efforts of staff in wellness initiatives, including nominating them for the Ministry's highly regarded 'chocolate fish awards'. To maintain interest and momentum, articles about some aspect of staff wellness find a corner in each internal newsletter.
